The stock material has some imperfections and after the coin is struck (and sometimes before) the material will peel or fall off the coin. There are even examples where the whole planchet will shatter or split off. The last one slabbed with both pieces sold for over $10,000. So the extreme ones can be real valuable. But most are minor and bring less than a dollar. The bigger the lamination/split the more collectors want to pay for these.
