I'm thinking about getting some mint sets from a few years ago and was wondering which years used poor materials for storage, like PVC, or open to air causing toning.

I notice the coins in my 1986 set has toned slightly yellow. Is this still likely to happen with present day mint sets?

Not sure what happened to the rest of my message. I intended to say that the 20c coin seems to be affected the most.

Learjet, some of the 1984 & 1985 Mins sets have a funny plastic covering on them that turns really yellow. The coins are not discoloured, just the plastic. My 1986 set is fine though, but that's not to say some of them may have been made with the same plastic covering.

I think in my 1986 it's actually the coins, but it's only very slight.

With some of these mint sets would it be better to take them out and put them in 2x2s?

I have a 1988 set which has toned coins in it. Mostly it is the $1 and $2 that have dis-coloured.

Interesting, with the 1986 the 50c, 10, and 5c have toned.

1984 and 1985 mint sets were shocking for the plastic going yellow but from what I have seen it thankfully doesn't affect the coins inside
The storage conditions of the sets seem to affect the coins themselves not the plastic
Baby mint sets for some reason in the 1990s are prone to having stained al/br coins,ie the 1 and 2 dollar coins
