This was a tough one. When I saw it on ebay (these were the pictures) I knew it was a decent price, but that I'd also have to pay to have it authenticated. I just got an email from ANACS letting me know it's on its way back in a graded holder. See if you can guess the grade and if you can figure out the variety (I'm leaning toward S-72) from the blurry pics from the listing, let me know. Thanks, HABIB Edited by halfabustisbetter 10/16/2007 07:47 am

I don't know large cents, and I didn't look in the grading book but for some reason F is coming into my psychic coin mind. She has a lot of detail to her and looks like she has some minor corrosion(? but that might be the pictures?). Post pics when you get her back.

Nice coin half. I don't have any 18th century pieces (yet). Someday I'm going to get a few. Maybe the large cents, maybe the bust dollar. What history these pieces have! Enjoy your coin. Do you have many pre 1800 pieces?

Very Beautiful Coin! Liberty's ear is visible, I'll say VF20. Congratulations!

This is my only pre-1800 US coin. The local coin shop just got in a 1798 dollar in VF (details, cleaned, needle sharp reverse strike) that was offered to me for $1300. If I put it on layaway it would be my last major purchase for the year, so I don't think I'll buy it right now-- though every time I see it, I change my mind again. I didn't mention it, but this one was a $350 Buy It Now on ebay. The seller also had an 1880 Morgan in AU he was offering at $170 (a little high ).

Hi HABIB, I pulled out my Wes Rasmussen Collection catalog of US Large Cents (from Heritage) which is a great resource for large cent varieties. I also think your coin is a S-72 (Sheldon) variety with is rated High R2 on the rarity scale. Based on the catalog photos, I see the following variety markers for S-72: 1) pole very close to Liberty's bust, 2) date low, with '4' slightly higher, 3) rims strong with sharp denticles, and 4) final leaves in wreath very close together. According to the catalog listing, this variety was from the last delivery of 1794 large cents and immediately preceded the 1795 coinage. Your coin looks well-balanced for wear on front and back and seems well-struck. The rims and legend are quite strong. There's some rim damage at the lower reverse, as well as what looks like planchet flaws around U of United. I'd grade it VF20 or a bit better for wear, but the surfaces look finely porous. Maybe that effect is exaggerated in the photos. I would expect ANACS will give it a "net grade" due to damage and/or corrosion. If they do put it in a standard slab, you got a fantastic buy for $350. Some time ago I paid $1000 for a S-29 cent with detail similar to yours. ANACS net-graded it F-12 due to corrosion and tooling which I hadn't detected. I later sold it at a loss. Even if ANACS determines it is damaged, your coin looks like a much smarter purchase! Congratulations!

I'd grade this VF-20.
The porosity may 'net grade' it down to F. Cool coin and I think you got a great deal!

You're right, I'm sure it will be net graded both for the porosity and the hit on the rim.
