This 1880-S appears to have a substantial die-crack through the "B" in LIBERTY. I can't find a VAM for it. I suppose there's a slight possibilty that it could be post mint damage, but it sure doesn't look like it to me. Here's a couple of pictures with lighting from different angles.

It actually looks like a die crack above the "B", which turns into a die chip through the "B". What do you think? Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Rick

Hi

Looks like it runs out of the B and into the field on one pic.
Then on the other pic. just in the B. Almost like part of it is a gouge and part a comb. of chip's and a crack. If that makes sense.
I checked the vams also and seeing as 95%+ of the 1880-S are just DD's
That looks unlikely. Is it a normal looking obv. otherwise ?
(correct obv. for the date) If so, then maybe someone else with more experience can help you on whether it is a crack or damage. If not,
then ck. to see if any other obv. dies were used that date and then ck. for vams from there.

I've been all over this coin.... one of the problems I'm having, though, is that it's DMPL which makes any type of doubling, etc. extremely hard to see, let alone photograph. There are no other die breaks or clash.

The reverse has polishing lines aroung the eagle identical to VAM 70, but no scratch through the arrow feathers. The "1" and "0" in the date appear doubled, especially the "0" as shown. Both "8"s appear doubled in the scan, but I can't tell through the loupe. Also, there's a small chip at 9 o'clock inside the upper loop of the first "8". The mintmark is set slightly left, and there is a die chip in the "G" on the reverse.

Another problem, of course, is the high number of doubled date VAMs for this mintage and not very many pictures available. If the experts feel the die break through the "B" in LIBERTY warrants it, I'll send it to Leroy to figure out.

Thanks,

Rick

I don't see anything listed in the last supplement for this. Can you see this with the naked eye or do you have to use a loupe? If you can see it with the naked eye then I would send it to Leroy, he prefers breaks where the metal is flowing out of the break.
