G-day all,
I'm new to the forum and am quite impressed so far.
I look forward to getting to know you all a little better.
I have a question for you, I have a 1942 KG V1 with an 'I' below and also one without. I have been told that the Penny without the 'I' is more valuable than the penny with. Is this true and why?

Cheers

Welcome to the Forum, Ynmaker. :)

It does appear to be true, that the 1942Y. penny is more valuable than the 1942I penny. However, that separation only begins at Very Fine, and up.

As you probably know, the penny with the I was minted in Bombay India. The Y. mintmark places the pennies from the Perth Mint.

As for why the one is more valuable than the other; there could be many reasons. Perhaps one of the other Australian members can answer the question for us both.

From the info in my Maccas Guide, 1942Y mintage 12244, 1942I mintage 9000.

As to why the 1942Y is worth more in the higher grades, someone else will no doubt be able to explain that.

Thank you for your replies ElleKitty and nancyc, I appreciate it. I'll keep researching. I am in the process of gathering a collection again as I had all my coins stolen 4 years ago and I'm only just getting over the heartbreak of it now. Many of them were left to me by my Grandfather, so you can imagine the sentimental value.
Thanks to ebay and some wonderful sellers there I have gained nearly all Pennies again and most of my Half pennies too.
