This measures 88mm (3.5 inches),and 141 grams. I'm pretty sure it is called a Wu Zhu charm or amulet, but I'm not sure. I believe it is from the 19th century or earlier, but again, I'm not sure. Can anyone shed some light on what this is, how old it is, etc.

Thanks, Petrus. That is a cool site, and where I got most of my information before posting. I kind of know what it is, but not really. I was wondering if anyone more knowledgeable on these kind of things could give their input, as I can't seem to find anything that looks like this one. The character on the right is "Wu" and on the left is "Zhu", hence the Wu Zhu Charm name. It looks modern, but the collection it was in makes me think 1800's or earlier.

Yes, it is a Chinese "wu zhu" charm which I explain here.

However, the reverse side of your charm is different.

Your charm has a 3-claw dragon on the reverse. The head is at the 7-8 o'clock position. The body winds around the square hole with the tail ending at the 6 o'clock position.

It is difficult to date these charms.

As best I can tell from the images, your charm is not "old". It could have been made at any time from the Republican period (1912-1949) right up to modern times. My guess is that it was made in modern times.

Thanks, Gary. That linked page was where I started my journey this morning from a Google image that had the same characters as mine. How cool that it was you! This forum continues to amaze me. This charm can't be newer than the 50's or maybe early 60's, so I will guess it is from the 1912 to 1949 period, and may have been brought back from China by my Grandfather. I was just wondering if it had any value to it. It is big enough to hang on a wall.

For anyone interested, here are a couple of Wu Zhu coins from the late 2nd or early 1st century BC, worth "5 grain" or about 500 grains of millet.
