I just picked this piece up and I cannot find a thing on it. So far all I know is from what's on the medal. I cannot find any pics of it, no records of one being sold, nothing. So hopefully someone here might know something about it Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Obverse: (Translation) Under-counter of the building industry.
The signature underneath the lady is EUG. FAROCHON (French engraver eugine farochon)

Also it is 36mm, and about 25 grams. The only scale I have is a postal scale that weighs in increments of 5 grams so its not very accurate.

Any French medal experts? I'm still not finding anything on this piece. Maybe a mod can move this to the identification forum?

There is. I didn't think of looking until you asked.

It looks like CUIVRE

I just looked up the stamp and all it tells is it was made out of bronze (cuivre= copper) and the pointing hand tells it was struck between June 23, 1845 to October 31, 1860.

Cuivre means copper.
It seems to be a common practice in France to stamp the edge of medals with the metal, I've also seen ARGENT for silver and OR for gold.

Jean Baptiste Eugène Farochon, born 1812, was a noted Parisian sculptor, coin engraver and medallist.

More in this translated Wikipedia article http://translate.google.co.uk/trans...=en&sl=fr&u=http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Baptiste_Farochon&prev=search

The British Museum has his death year as 1869.

The reverse (as you have it) shows the arms of Paris (France).

Neither do I, I had a trial but didn't use it much, so I didn't continue.

If you take the trial, do let us know how much it sold for.

How much did you pay for it ?

since no one has said much about the medal...
The Artist is Jean-Baptise Eugine Farochon 1807-1871 ( or as one source said 1812-1869)but I doubt that source a bit.
He is a bit better known as a sculptor than a medalist. He trained under J.L. David.

Comptior De L'Industrie was basicly a bank. Des Comptiors (the counters) were a set up to lend money to the Government. France was in caos at this time with a new revolution every few months or weeks in some cases. There was a 'New" republic set up in May of 1848 which is between the dates of the decrees on this medal. So I presume that the first decree was setting up the Counter of the Building Industry by one government then the second by the Republic. In reality France was run by a very few, very rich men who had their own interests so I expect that the artist was commisioned by the owner of the comptoir to engrave this not long after July 1848.
