I just sent Chuck my numbers for the 5000 cents I did. Oddly enough for me being only three hours from canada, Not a single Canadian cent. No wheats in this batch.
The oldest cents were 1959 and 1959 D cents. What I thought was neat was a pattern that developed staring in 1988. The ratio of P to D coins of each year starting in 1988 was close. Approximately 10 P to 100 D mint coins from 1988 through 1996. Then it all went haywire....very few P mint cents from 1997 to present.
Really fun, but my eyes are whacked now:-)
Also, I did like Chuck's suggested method of sorting the coins. I found that to work really well.

Well I am finally done, did a little here and there. Nothing really interesting, I stopped searching for varieties half way through, it was taking to much time. All I wanted was to get done at the end.

Best thing to do on one of these 5000 coin searches is to first sort ALL the coins by date and mint, then go back through the dates of interest looking for the big die varieties. Searching every coin is a pain in the butt and far more often doesn't produce anything worth the time and effort.

cc - Did you ever get the email I sent on October 26th? The subject was IL Volunteer - I haven't done anything yet since I haven't heard back from you. Let me know if you still need my help!

I started my batch. I got them grouped by decade and have done the 12 Wheats, 59-69, and 70-79 so far, roughly 1000 sorted and counted. Interesting finds have been the 12 Wheats (oldest 1939S and a 1955D that is UNC), 12 Canadian post-1965, 2 Canadian 1938's, a 1960D Small Date (that little doughnut 0 is easy to spot when you compare them), a UNC 1960 Large Date, 1969S with Planchet marks running from 10 PM to 5 PM, 1973 with Kennedy's head on it, 1976 with Liberty Bell and the USA on it, and a +1982 Planchet. But anyhow, here's a picture I took tonight of a few of them.

This is such a fascinating project. I am considering volunteering, as I see help could be used in Ohio, but I am a little worried about time constraints. If I could dedicate an hour a night, how quickly do you suppose I could do it? I want to be sure I'd have enough time to do it before I commit to anything, and as I have nothing to compare it to, any suggestions etc. are helpful!

It took me around 12 hours, a little here and a little there. I separated all of them into last dates in around 4-5 hours. I then did the years a little each night.

I think coppercoins has said He would like to get all the numbers in by the end of the year ,, there is a few days more than 6 weeks to go for that goal ,, even at a half hour a night 5000 cents could be completed easily in that time .
go for it ! the more counted the more accurate the data will be .

Thanks a lot, I appreciate your help. I am going to read thru the information one more time just to be sure I will know what I'm doing, and then I think I will go for it, it'll be fun to be a part of something so interesting.

So, is there any of the coins that we're sorting that we say, 'YIPPEE! I found one!' ?
