This is the 1887 shilling I have

It appears the device separating the date is pointing to a rim tooth, I bought a coin collecting book which says these are scarce.

Also what would u guys grade it? I've thought and looked at other coins and reckon an AU?

AU kidding? guffaw.. sorry, no without appearing too rude I cannot agree with that estimate as I have a better grade one in VF-EF which also has the device pointing at the bead. May post a photo later - it may turn out to be only a little less common than the normal variety...

Just my guess on it, seeing the actual coin is different, the photo is bad, was only my guess

but also is it even a shilling? coz I've looked up and it also looks like the withdrawn sixpence?

Depends on size...I don't know what the difference in design is yet

Going by the pics in Krause, the easiest way to tell the difference betweeen the 1887 shield sixpence and shield shilling (when you don't know the size of the coin in question) is the obverse, and the location of the words GRATIA BRITT with respect to the crown.

On the sixpence, the crown takes up all the space between the Queen's head and the coin's rim, squeezing the words out to either side. On the "small bust" shilling of 1887, there's more room and the final "A" and initial "B" are hovering directly over the crown. "Large bust" shillings of 1889-1892 are scaled-up versions of the sixpence design. I actually have examples of both of these coins, so hopefully this pic I just made shows what I mean:

If this is the case, then your one is actually a sixpence.

As to grade, I'd agree that it's a British VF, American EF. There's too much wear on the lion's faces and Queen's collar to count it as aUnc.

Thanks again Sap, and well explained - I have the two coins but I just compare the two together and see which one overlaps the other
