2.98 grams. About 16-16.5 mm (a hair smaller than a FRD pfennig). Obverse appears to be CAVREICO _________CEL. Reverse TNITRPXVIIIM?VIIIC?

Came with a certificate of authenticity by Douglas Thomas, Senior Numismatist.

It's a denarius I'm pretty sure. I believe it's of Antoninus Pius but I get him, Commodus and Marcus Aurelius mixed up on their coin portraits sometimes. Romancoin.info is down right now so I can't check inscriptions.

Unless you know who that guy is, I'm afraid that certificate's worthless. What company is it from?

If it were me, I would pay between $30-50 for your coin.

I'd expect to see it for about $30.

A govmint.com certificate is almost as worthless as one you've printed yourself, I'm afraid. I wouldn't trust them to authenticate a parking ticket. It also explains why you have a "certificate of authenticity" that doesn't seem to say what it actually is.

That being said, I hope you didn't buy it from govmint yourself; if you did, you'd have overpaid. Direct marketing companies like govmint generally sell genuine items, just way overpriced. They also go for gimmicky bandwagon-jumping sales pitches. It wouldn't surprise me if Govmint bought in a bulk lot of these Commodus denarii back when the movie "Gladiator" came out, and offered them as some kind of movie tie-in (Commodus was the evil emperor in that movie).

No, I picked it up from an LCS. I appear to have paid a wholesale price, and am glad to have it. I have only been playing in ancients for a few weeks, so I don't know who the players are yet. Thanks again for all your help, with all my mysteries.

FWIW, a business acquaintance just received a Marcus Aurelius denarius for Christmas, so I can't wait to show him my Commodus. From what I've read, Commodus didn't persecute the Christians nearly as much as Marcus Aurelius, so I'm just as happy to have his denarius instead, giving no credence to Hollywood's depiction of Roman history.
