Is it possible to get $500 & $1,000 bills at a bank? Many people have said that if you asked, that you'd be able to get one. They said the bank uses these bills to transfer among each other. Does anyone know if they would give any to the public if asked?

Odds are you won't get one from a bank. You could possibly get one if someone in front of you in line happens to turn one in.

Probably not. If I remember correctly, neither have been printed since 1934 and the quantities printed for most of either series were less than 100,000.

i don't think they are even printed anymore. banks are all or most are electronic now so they don't need the large bills any more. the 500 and 1000 were only printed for banks to transfer funds between them granted some did get issued but was not meant to be out there.

I agree, I think you will be hard pressed to find one at a bank.

Besides the fact that they stopped making them, this question made me think about a recent casino trip I made. I saw someone win just over $22K on a video poker machine and they paid them in bricks of $100 bills. I have to believe if $500 bills were still accessible, a casino would use them for sure.

I asked ... at a handful of banks over the past few years, and I usually got a blank look from the teller. No luck here, so collectors/dealers are the only way to get 'em now.

As amac44 said back in 1969 the Fed issued a directive to all the banks that any $500 or $1000 bills received were not to be paid back out but were to be returned to the Federal Reserve for destruction. So any bank that gave you one would be in violation of Federal Reserve regulations. Not really something you are going to convince them to do.
