acidic1 - The coin is a "Tourist" counterfeit. It is still being sold in several US locations for $1 or less as a "Replica" of Pirate Money. I have seen it in Florida. It is one of several coins that are often seen together in a set sold in Cardboard. Calling this particular item a Fake is a very good term. Counterfeit is actually too kind and could be misleading, since it is essentially worthless. The design is actually a fantasy version of the original with a couple serious errors. The most obvious is the miss spelled legend on the shield side. It should read "IN UTROQ FELIX AUSPICE DEO". It reads "IN UTRO....."

The Krause publication "Spain, Poertugal and the New World" covers all of the various coins from 1600 to 2000 and is the least expensive book to add to your collection.

Even though this is an obvious fake, my records show that this same type coin has been posted as REAL on ebay at least three times in the past 4 years.
