I've started building a collection of German silver coins from 18th to 20th century. It's a big undertaking but I'm hoping to be able to get at least one of every type. Here are two of my recent additions.

1. 1858 Thaler from Saxony, I'd grade this as f/vf
2. 1855 2 Gulden (1 1/3 Thaler) from Bavaria depicting the restoration of the Madonna Column in Munich. Grade EF

I collected German State coins for a short time. I particularly like the Anhalt-Bernburg coins with the bear(s). Here are a couple web sites that might be of interest:

Im not an expert on the Bavarian series - but if that was a Mexican or US coin struck in a collared press I would bet it was a counterfeit. The collar on this coin is clearly irregular - wider along one margin. That points to a poorly aligned die pair. Yet, it is my belief that Bavaria was definitely state of the art in that regard. Perhaps a specialist in the State of Bavaria could comment about the traces of the collar visible on typical business strikes of the period.

Actually, the collar is the same all around. It's the angle that I took the picture that makes it look a little off. I don't have another example to go by, so I am relaying on the image from my DVD version of Krause at 400% zoom the coin is exactly the same.
