Well, here's something I've never seen before. It's a normal 1974 Lincoln Penny, that has KS in the picture of the state of Kansas stamped into the front. Obviously post-minting, but a curiousity none the less... Anyone have any idea why this might have been made? Or just some random guy making souveniers.

They used to be released in a set of all 50 states - help the kids learn them or something. My dad has one someplace.

Really? Huh, I've never heard of such a thing... I just found it in a roll of pennies at work today.

I just went to look for my dad's board it's in a box labeled Dad's coins somewhere. Found one box with coins and some old movies but not the penny board. If I can find the board later I'll see if I can't get some pics up.

They were made as novelty items and were often sold in places like truck stop souvenir shops. They were made with stampings of most states. They are post mint novelties. And...you could get these as a set with all the states being represented.
There are also many with the profile of John F Kennedy on them. There are also many with Lincoln smoking a pipe or a cigar.
They would sell for 50 cents to a dollar at a souvenir shop. They have very little value as collectibles. perhaps 25 cents.
I hope that helps,
Bill

The only info I was really able to find on the set was that they were on the 1973 and 1974s only.

I always wanted to get a punch that said Y2K for 1999 Cents and a Y2K No Show for 2000 Cents, but never did. Probably would have defaced coins with that and stopped thinking about it. The marks on the coins remind me of the counterstruck ones a long time ago.

Remember the abe smoking a pipe penny? I posted one not too long ago here and I don't know if anyone noticed or not but if that abe's profile on that cent is turned sideways the the pipe becomes a #2 and the three smoke rings become three #0s. Making it say 2000. I would download that abe smoking a pipe here to show you but I don't know how to do that. I also have a similar coin with a state thing too. I'll try to find it and post a pic. Can't get the pics up up. Camera batteries need recharging.

If you're like me and the site gives you problems when you try to upload your pictures, you may want to try and load them through http://www.photobucket.com first then just insert them in the image tags.
