I need someone to confirm this is a DDO. I'm having problems getting a good picture of the doubling because the coin is uncirculated and shiny but maybe you can see. Image: HPIM0569.jpg33.75 KB

Unfortunately I can't see much from these pics, also I'm no expert. But better pics are going to be key here on the forums. Also your second pic is not going to be any good because of the angle. From what I've heard and seen the best way to look at these coins is straight on. Hope this helps. I'm sure an expert will be along shortly to give you some more help.

Is liberty or the motto also doubled ? Or just the date. If not, may be just Machine Doubling. I'm curious myself just to see what the experts say.

Date Scan. It still isn't picking up 100% of the secondary numbers but is picking up enough to see. These are scanned looking straight at it (no angle) Image: LastScan1980ddo20.jpg24.95 KB

Machine doubling. The last picture helped me out a bunch.
The key is that the doubling has no real character of it's own, it's just a reprint of what's above it. I assume the doubled part is also flat against the background in comparison to the original.

I think it's either Machine Doubling or poor pics. I'm certainly no expert. But I like to throw in my opinion along with the experts. And I'm improving.

I still think it is dd. Sorry bout the bad pics. It looks exactly like the images of the 1980 DDO in one of my books (Strike It Rich With Pocket Change by Brian Allen and Ken Potter). Is there anywhere I could send it to be checked? (without high grading prices)

No, Its not...I've had a few in my time and the date has some specific characteristics. The 8, for example , even on a worn example is larger on the lower left in appearance. The 0 looks bigger on the lower left and the upper right. On a coin in your condition, you would see nice grooves on all the digits of the date. There are none on your coin that would compare. Your coin exhibits Mechanical Doubling. In actuality, it looks nothing like the picture in the book, or the one in the CherryPickers Guide or the 6 pieces that I have had and sold in the past. Thanks, Bill

This is a different coin. Is this also Mechanical Doubling? The scan didnt pick up the lines good but there are some to the right of the 8 also. Image: LastScan80-3.jpg16.45 KB

Thr first two images are too small of the date and Liberty. But the third image doesn't show anything that I can see that would be anything. Unless they are not showing in the images, I don't think you have anything. Hang on to it till you get a better image through a scope. I always hate to not hang on to a coin and find out later it was something and I spent it. So hang on to till your sure. From the images provided it just appears to a normal coin.

There is no die doubling on any of the coins pictured. I described what to look for on the 1980 DDO and these pictures do not show it at all. Thanks, Bill
