Why is the 2001S Sacagawea so expensive? Before you say because it's rare, let me tell you:

2001S 3,183,740 mintage $100
2004S 2,965,422 rarer mintage $18
2006S 2,923,105 even rarer mintage $15

What's the deal? Or is the 2001S just a rip off? Or are the 2004S and 2006S undervalued?

Was there some weird fire that melted a million?

Very odd!!

The only thing that I could think of is that the 2001 proof set is in demand, so a lot of people aren't cracking those out and there for there aren't a lot of single 2001S sacs? That's just a guess on my part.

It has me confused big time why they selling 2001 sacs proof coins for 55 to 80 bucks on ebay. I need one for my book. What was so special about the 2001 proof sets? They expensive for whatever reason.

I am learning prices on complete 2001 and 1999 silver proof sets are droping in prices on ebay. To finish my book since I need the sac dollar. I am going buy an 2001 proof set on ebay for around 60 to 70 dollars and take it apart for the dollar . Maybe I can sell the remains on ebay to get some money back becides paying an dealer 50 to 100 for proof dollar.

It got me what so special about 2001 or is it dealers writing price books wanting to inflate coin prices to make money . Example 2000 proof sets go for less money what they sold for at us mint when they were new. I can understand 1999 being expensive since they were the first year on them .

Interesting question. I to have wondered why. I did manage to find one at a local show for 40 bucks, still I think it was about 25 to much but it was the last one I needed for the set.. YADA YADA.

I think that the 99 Silver set will come back to earth as soon as the State Quarter run is over. There is no reason it too is inflated to where its at. Maybe somebody has a million sets stashed away?

CARL, did you mistakenly buy a million 1999S Silver sets and forget about them?

I WAS able to obtain one for about 60 bucks. So maybe the RedBook is just way off. But I can still get the slightly rarer ones for way less. I guess that is one of the really interesting things about this hobby. The values of coins are always changing and not necessarily in unison with each other! In a few years, I would bet that the 2001S will stabilize around $50-$60 and the others will edge up closer to that range.
