1974 S Mint Marks

I believe they are called open and closed mint marks, for the S mint marks.

There were a Large and Small date for that year. But the punch and the striking of the punch in to the die can make a smaller/larger shape on the mint mark. Location on different dies may also vary as they were punched with the mint mark by hand. Also they change punches after they wear down too much or get distorted. Some years have three different distinct mint marks. If you look on different denominations of the same year, you can see the same punch used for the same year.
