I was just wondering, how many people would consider a proof example of a coin interchangeable with a business strike? Or would you require one of each? (And then, if you do it for one type, you'd have to backtrack and go for proof and business examples of every available type you already have, for consistency of course.... this clearly proves that coin collecting is a mental health issue. )

Personally if I was just doing it for types, I think they would be interchangeable. Unless they were being placed in an album...then I might need a circulated version to go in the album so the proof could stay pretty.

I have proofs and business strikes in my Dansco7070. I was going to do a pattern/proof 7070 album but just trying to find good business strikes in some of the coins is hard enough and one would probably have a million dollars in their 7070 if they intended to fill it with patterns and proofs only, but it sure would be pretty to look at

The beautiful thing about a type set is that its totally up to you. There is no right or wrong way. It all comes down to what you like & what you can afford.
If you like the combination of proofs, uncs, & circulated examples then go for it. You want all proofs thats fine too.
I personally prefer high grade (XF+ to AU) circulated examples because it's what I like and what I can afford.
If you're collecting coins it's for your enjoyment not necessarily ours.

If I can afford to put a proof in the hole, I do. I love the look of the proof next to a business strike.

I also use Proofs in my Type set if it is affordable. Although, if I'm collecting a date set of business strikes, then Proofs are a no-go for me.

But being inconsistent makes it much much easier to end run the so called "agents of change" and their expelled waste-matter via a bull. Becky's idea is great! Contrast is not only fun, it mitigates the prospects of burn-out.

It works if it pleases you to see a proof included in your type set.
Personally, I would use an unc, probably not a proof.
Unless I liked the way it looked.

Personally I just don't think it looks good to have a normal coin next to a proof. Of course as already noted it is up to your own taste. In an Album when you open it up and the coins are all over the place in grades it just distracts from the idea of the collection. Or at least my opinion. I don't even like the idea that so many Albums require a proof with the regular coins. For example a Lincoln Album where the latest years require a P,D,S for each year. Then there is two normal coins and a proof over and over. Sort of ruins the image I think. If all coins are proofs or all buisness strikes I just think it looks better.

I have proofs in my 7070 for the common coins but since it is an album, I would not want to put a proof of great value in there for fear of any slight blemish to the mirrors taking a couple hundred bucks off the value . Really though, it is a matter of personal preference, what you like, and what you can afford.
