Tonight I bought a "full spectrum" (FS) lamp to aid in my coin photography. My current lighting setup is: plain 60W bulb in bankers style desklamp, 60 watt over-head flood light and the full spectrum lamp. I think I have more work to do, the blue factor needs to be reduced because the FS light seems to introduce a lot of blue. Here's some pics from my "quick and dirty" testing on a corroded Lincoln:

Here's is a shot just adding the FS light with my orginal WB calibration:

The shot is just using the same old 2 light setup before the FS light and calibration:

This last shot is using all 3 lights and a new WB calibration:

These shots show the huge impact lighting has on coin photography. I think with a bit more tweeking, the new FS lamp will help with my colors. It also seems to bring out more detail on the coin....including any flaws. Comments are welcome and I will continue with my testing of this new lamp.

More playing around with the FS lamp. I know the color is not right yet, but I thought it was interesting how much the FS brings out the fine details. Take a close look at Abe's head, you can see all the details well.

Here's with a much better white balance calibration. Notice the back ground, it's just white paper. In the previous shot it's bluish....shows improper white balance. This is very, very close to how this coin looks in hand:

I really like the last one, especially if that's the true color. But it does seem not as crisp.....Did you sneeze with this one?

The second pic uses my OLD lighting setup. While it may seem to be the most natural, a lot of the coins details are missing. If you side by side compare the old lighting with the "all 3", you'll see what I mean. Look at Abe's hair and the field on the left. My old setup hides those flaws, the addition of the natural light brings those out. I'm going to adjust the color scale to take out some of the blue, that should bring the more natural color back like my original lights.

You should only use lamps with the same colortemperature to avoid those colorcasts. Just buy a few 5000k flourescent lamps and balance your camera to that = no more whitebalance problems.

Actually, you could buy 3000k, 3300k, 6000k or any other K lamps as long as everything you use is the same.
