Good question. Because you asked where I buy 'most of' my coins, I answered ebay. That's true for quantity but for quality my answer is shops and shows equally.

Sadly, ebay. I have emptied out my dealer's hoard a long time ago.
My partial coin collection http://www.omnicoin.com/collection/gxseries
My numismatics articles and collection: http://www.gxseries.com/numis/numis_index.htm
Regularly updated at least once a month.

I used to buy a lot off of ebay and visit local coin shops.
Now here are my most often to least often ways of buying coins:

coin shows - between MA, NH and CT there is one every weekend
dealer friends which find coins for me
auctions - CNG, Pegasi, Freeman & Sear, Stacks, Heritage, Kuenker, etc
online dealers - solo web sites, ma-shops, delcampe, vcoins
CCF member sales and auctions
occasionally ebay
rarely visit a coin shop
never bought at estate/garage sales/flea markets

I buy from everywhere. I find that I buy mostly from online dealers because it is convenient. I do buy on ebay (not for some time though) and my local dealer gets a little of my business. Coin shows are few and far between and I usually take my want list and buy some wants and some impulse items. At the online dealers I buy from I can go in add coins of every type, albums, supplies, rolls, whatever and pay one low shipping charge and most importantly I know the seller.

I buy like Jim, but a bit more from ebay than I would like. I feel it's more of a risk, but there are things there that you either can't get from regular online dealers or are too expensive via that channel.

I like the local coin shows for traditional collectibles (like Morgans and Peace dollars) as it is much harder to judge what you are buying online than in hand. For the modern commemoratives (encapsulated proofs) it is more a question of finding a reasonable price - also at most coin shows dealers only have the traditional items (few world coins).

Good question - ten years ago I would have answered coin shops, but there aren't many around where I live now.

I buy mostly from e-bay also. I don't have a lot of time during the day to go coin shopping, so e-bay is convenient.

For quantity, most of mine come from the bank.

I had to vote E-Bay 1st and online dealers next due to the geographic location where we reside. There are no shops w/i 50 miles (one small shop in town) and after that it's several hundred miles to the next nearest coin dealer.

Take Care

Seems like ebay is the way of many including myself. No coin shops in my area, maybe one show a year that is an hours drive away. I get a fair amount from people here thru sales and trades.
