I picked this up for 150$ from German ebay from a guy who was actually from Oregon.. go figure, Its difficult with a small digi cam to take quality pictures of such a small coin so these are the pictures from ebay ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...MEWN:IT&rd=1 )they are better than my attempts... there isn't one mark on this thing Image: b8_1_b.jpg6.7 KB Image: 14_1_b.jpg7.05 KB Any comments are welcome, I am sorry If I am putting in too many requests, its just I am reasonably new to the whole grading thing and the people on here have always given excellent feeback and its helping me learn as I go.... Thanks as always Edited by smcc3573 09/01/2005 12:31 am

First of all, you will never have a problem with putting in "too many requests". That is what the forum is here for. The more opinions you get, the closer you will be to forming your own grading opinions. That's how we learn.
As far as this coin goes, it is very pretty and I can't find any marks on it. Does it have full luster? Gold is especially hard for me to grade by pics, but if the luster is complete, I would guess at MS63 or better. I don't offer MS grades higher than that on gold based on a pic. Ageka is much better at this than I am.

Have you checked this coin for authenticity ?
Weight 1.6720 G. Diameter 15
There is a small difference on the reverse design (closed wreath at the top )that does not look right to me (taking into account Iam far from an expert)these coins have been extensively reproduced,,
Assuming its authentic I agree with susan on the grade MS-63 ,,

First I got an 1868 myself which looks totally different ( uncertified ) Second the closest photo I found at coinfacts com is a 1865 which looks different too ( but my 1868 looks exactly like this coin ) For instance the bottom of the hair folds back too much to the right There is too much detail in the hair right of the eye The hairdress looks too large The 1 in dollar looks too fat etc I have been told that the weight and diameter and gold content will be exactly right because they use totally used gold coins from about that date melt them down and restrike and so a feature by feature comparison is necessary The coin does not seem to have strike lustre but rather pressed between a vice or hydrolic press I do not pretend to know anything about american coin fakes but the main question is not the grade but the authenticity and I would show it to a specialised dealer and ask his ( free ) opinion Image: Coinfacts dollar.jpg42.92 KB

Thanks for the feedback, you are right looking at the photo it doesn't seem to match up, the detail in the hair is wrong, and the eyebrow is not as pronounced, and there is not enough room between the top of the headdress and States... I will look at it more closely tonight

I checked the coin in detail against the photo and its a fake, I even noticed that the reverse is about 1mm off centre... spoke to the seller and he will take it back, thanks everyone for saving me 150$.... this is the first fake coin I have ever bought (unknowingly) and its taught me a lesson...

I am glad the vendor is willing to take the coin back
I never bid on a coin I do not find in Krause or another reference and which I am not able to grade myself against a good photo reference
