1917 W ? Mercury Dime

I have two questions. I know this dime is pretty beat up. But was just curious if it's possibly that this might have been struck through string or wire or is it just some big damage? Second, I see the mint mark and it looks like a "w" to me, I checked Red Book and don't see a W mint for that year. Am I missing something?

nevermind, I checked the book, noob mistake of me to not see the mint mark is on the back lol. But what is that W on the front? I've not collected mercs before so I am still curious what that is for

It is actually AW, just like on the reverse of a Walking Liberty half dollar. It is the designer's initials- Adolph Alexander Weinman. As far as the appearance, it is scratched and it looks like someone tried to pretty it up a bit with a little AT
