Hello all. I know it's been a while, but we are going through the rough times. My grandmother passed last Tuesday(Cancer fighter since 1997), and it's been hard on my dad. We are a very small family (3 kids, 2 grandkids, me being the oldest grandchild), so you can imagine. Well anyway. I have come across a few more coins and still haven't completed the cleaning out of my grandparents house. Either way, I want to send some coins off for grading. Why? Just because. I have come across some more $5 gold pieces that are sealed in some nice cases. This is on top of my 1904 $5 that I already came across. I really don't feel like dealing with any dealers in the area. I am very upset with the attitudes I have been getting. I DON'T WANT TO SELL THESE....these people are friggn vultures(sp?). Why not just get them into air tights? I like them to be inside graded slabs. Just personal taste. So...how do you suggest I go about this. It appears that I have to "join" a club. Not just ANA but the company that grades these? Who should I send them off to? One company over the other? Well, sorry for the long post, but I wanted to stop in and say "HI"! Hope all is well,

I think you can send in coins to be graded to ICG yourself if I'm not mistaken. From what I've read, they're a very reliable service. I noticed in a recent Greysheet that ICG graded coins have the highest sight unseen values relative to Greysheet (sight seen) values of all the services, with PCGS and NGC close behind. (if that makes sense) I also believe that ICG is the official grading service of the CONECA collectors club. Maybe some other members have more info on this, I only recently rekindled my interest in coins! Finally, I think ICG has a special offer right now for collectors to send in a certain number of coins at once. If I did this right this should take you to their website: http://www.icgcoin.com/index.htmHope this helps!

I personally prefer ANACS as their standards are so strict. I've always been more interested in being sure that my coins were accurately graded. They are tough on gold pieces, but a high grade from there means so much more. Their submission prices are very reasonable also. Here is the link: http://www.anacs.com/index.html

I must agree with Susan on this one. ANACS is the choice I would use at this time. I don't like being forced to join an imaginary club to submit coins. If nothing else just call Anacs and have a chat with them. They will be glad to help you out.

That's interesting to know about ANACS. I forgot that they are no longer affiliated with the ANA. The submission prices look reasonable too. Is there a way to tell the new slabs (post-ANA) from the older ones? I guess the market hasn't yet caught up with the fact that ANACS has more reliability? Wonder if ICG is rated so high because of some political reasons?

Hello all. Very nice to hear from you. Thank you for all the suggestions. I am very interested in the fact that they grade the gold harder. My one 5$ gold piece, in my un-educated guess, is perfect. SO I am excited to say the least.

Hi Jayson, First of all my condolences about your Grandmother, sounds like she put up a hell of a tuff fight. God bless your Dad and I do hope everything will work out for you, him & your family. FYI I am a member of NGC's Collector society web page as follows: http://www.collectors-society.com/join/ You might want to read their "benefits" page. I for one also like and respect ANACS and have had several gold pieces done by them also. What I like about NGC situation is the fact that for $99.00 they now will give you MS68 SAE PLUS 5 free submissions to grade coins for ya. (It also lets you use their "other" grading services & or conservation & or comic books I believe they now also do paper money.) Which basically means you get membership for free and get your money back (and some) when you do use them for 5 coins to submit. They also have a forum (which I rarely use or post in). Now to be fair, I also joined PCGS, the first year I joined both, but now only register & use NGC since IMO they grade the fairest. I am not looking to have my coins over graded nor do I want under graded--I want an accurate grade. You will hear many opinions about this & I for one will respect alls opinions. I would suggest you check all of the top 3-4 locations (NGC, ANACS, PCGS, ICG)and pull the trigger on what will gives you the best "BANG" for your buck. PS I am also a member of ANA, which after all the hassles and all the reading I have done here & other places will probably not renew current membership when it expires--
