I would think with no damage and good eye appeal you are looking in the range of $12 - $15 Thousand Dollars.

Without seeing the coin and knowing the variety there is no way to provide a price. A PCGS VG8 could be a $2,000 coin and could be a $20,000 coin.

Coin pics are juiced red. Look at the slab images and compare them. Price looks a little high too.

I highly question the VG-8 grade as well. The obverse looks awfully weak and the reverse has some damage. Price seems high to me but 1793 S-2 Chain Cents are extremely rare so rare that you can basically name the price and some collector will eventually buy.

Offer of $9,000 for that coin seems about right.

In your buying endeavors, get a key TYPE, not a key date. They will be more in demand as there are no other alternatives to fill that hole. A 1793 Chain cent is probably the best choice if you are wanting a key large cent. A 1799 is always in demand, but most collectors would turn towards a more-common date instead (1798, 1800, etc.).
Are you mainly a copper collector? I assume you are based on your username.

I think I will give in, and just buy one marked 'replica' or 'copy', for $5.

You have S-3 coins selling on Heritage in VG08 problem holders selling for almost 7K. Prices paid are based on real auction results and they vary wildly from coin to coin. Problem free VG8 S-2...(9-11K based on eye appeal, strike). The ebay coin you linked to I would buy for no more than 7.5-8K just based on the eye appeal..if that's what it really looks like.
