I'm back with another early silver coin that has me unsure whether it is original or has been cleaned and now has retoned.

It's an 1827 Capped Bust half dollar. The ebay seller listed it as "AU-58++" ( ebay let him get away with a numerical grade on an unslabbed coin) and said it has "much of the luster remaining".

I don't see any obvious cleaning marks and the toning looks nice, but I'm not expert enough to tell. I really can't tell much about the luster from the photos.

It sold for $187, which leads me to suspect bidders knew it was cleaned and retoned. Or maybe it just sold for a low price and someone got a real bargain.

What do folks think?

Thanks for sharing your opinions and helping me to continue learning how to tell the difference between original and cleaned coins.

From these relatively small pics, I don't see evidence of cleaning. Larger pics would help!

Hard to tell, and might have an old cleaning, but from pictures looks decent.

Can't make out hairline scratches from here.

If there is lustre remaining,
there is a good chance that it has been lucky enough, to not suffering the indignity of being cleaned.

Nice coin, and well purchased a $187.

I know nothing on how to pick excellent fakes with this series, but my inclination would be to have it professionally checked.
At that level ov value, there is a large temptation for the Chinese to move in. There is no verifiable provenance.

RATS!

Maybe I should have pulled the trigger and thrown in a bid.

Looks like it may be an O-104 R-1. I'd rather see it in hand, but from the pics, if it was cleaned it wasn't harsh enough to be detrimental.

Looks fairly original from the pics. Maybe a dipping a long, long time ago. Would hafta see it closer to look for hairlines. Could have went for less because of the digs into the metal on the obverse. People may have been scared it wouldn't make a graded holder.
