I was just reading a thread on another forum about the cliqueie nature of this hobby, the question was asked, How long before this type of thing hurts the Hobby ?
and that got me thinking ,, I know I shouldn't do that !!! but sometimes I cant help it . so I wanted to ask a couple of questions ?
How many folks here are mentoring a newbie collector ?
How many folks here would mentor a newbie collector if the prospect presented itself ?
How can we as a group bring a mentoring process into the forum ?
Were a very diverse group here with alot to share !!
I hope to get alot of responses to this thread !!!

I'm truly mentoring one new collector - my son, Thomas.
I would definitely mentor another new collector if given the opportunity. That was one of the driving forces behind the launching of this forum.
I'm not exactly sure what you're asking about bringing the mentoring process to the forum. By encouraging young numismatists to join this forum and participate, I believe the process already exists here. If you disagree, please tell me. If you have ideas, I'd be more than happy to hear them.

Hi Susan
Young collectors are only one aspect of being a newbie !!
What I was thinking was a type of matching process based upon interests and expertise ,, Example :
We have in this forum very knowledgable people for just about any coin type that you can think of ,,
but not everyone here is an expert on every coin type ! although we excange information in a general sense to mentor brings a whole new aspect to that exchange of information , if members were to match up extended interests with members who have an expertise in that extended interest.
I know I'm not communicating this very well, but not all newbies are necessisarily young, some of us are just being pulled to another area of collecting that they have never been in before !!
to have a direct flow of info from someone who is experianced in that new coin type would greatly reduce the amount of time and mistakes learning a new coin type .

Point taken regarding the age of new collectors.
I don't see how the logistics of what you're proposing would work. I believe the free exchange of info is more helpful than depending upon one individual, but let's see how everyone else feels.

I like your thought, and that is what many local coin clubs offer. While the internet makes life a little easier, it pretty much has put the final nail in the coffin of the local clubs. Mentoring programs used to be the very backbone of collecting. Many old time collectors and dealers alike got their start by working closely with a well versed collector. Today it seems as if many are looking for the very basics. Not a lot of effort is given to the study of coins. Time is at a premium today. Between schools, work, other activities, there isn't much time to spend studying little hobby related things. I belong to several types of groups outside of numismatics, and I constantly try to bring forth mentoring programs, and have yet to see one take hold.

Hi everyone. I thought I'd chime in one this since I am rather a newbie myself. This website has become a mentorship for me. I'm glad Rick pointed out that we're not all youngsters. I haven't been a youth for some time (although I did get carded by a new barman in our neighborhood pub last weekend!! Made my day). As a matter of fact, seeking advice was what brought me to this "community" and I really feel welcome. To me, that's a kind of mentorship, no? If I ever learn to take decent pictures or get a laser scanner, I could participate more. I'm comfortable that the information I get here is reliable, even where some disagree. Anyway, I'm having a good time studying the grading manual and comparing what I see there to what people are doing in these forums (fora?). Ciao for now. Be cool. Be true to your school. Stephen

We have two gradchildren who stay with us while their Mom works as an ER nurse. The little girl is eight, and the little boy is six. Both are becoming interested in collecting. Both are interested in the Statehood Quarters, as well as learning something about the Presidents on the obverses. In addition, each has a "birth year cup," and goes through change looking for coins for the cup. Both seem interested in collecting, based on their excitement, and the questions they ask. In addition, we have four other grandkids who receive coins as gifts, in the hope they will develop an interest.

How many folks here are mentoring a newbie collector ? First let me say I still consider myself a newbie but I was mentored into this hobby by 1finding my own way to many experts like Susan, National Dealer and Catman The got me over the first few humps and I will forever be grateful. How many folks here would mentor a newbie collector if the prospect presented itself ? By creating my own site, I have been contacted by many people and by mentoring them I am learning more myself. So I have to say include me.How can we as a group bring a mentoring process into the forum ? What a great idea. With more than 30 countries represented we should be able to support not only each other but help grow the coin collecting community.
Were a very diverse group here with alot to share !! OOhh YeeeahI hope to get alot of responses to this thread !!! Count me in

I teach a numismatic class once each year that lasts for about 4 months. Mostly kids attend with approval of their parents. I have found that the adults don't like taking a class with a child so I try to teach them independently. I enjoy doing this as you can't believe some of the questions these kids come up with and their perception of money. I once ask if anyone knew what the largest denomination of money we had was. After explaining what a denomination was a little girl raised hand, excited, and said "A credit card". catman
