Here's a 1939-D nickel graded by NGC. Grade it if you dare and compare your opinion to NGC. I'll post the slab grade shortly.

Hint: most of the scratchy marks visible in the photos are on the plastic, not the coin.

If the scratches are on the holder, then it's got to be a 66 if not higher. A beauty.

The scratches on the slab are throwing me off, thats why I'm going to say, its either an MS64 or MS65.

my first impression is MS63 - but the fields are clean and the luster is nice so i'd give it a MS65.

HABIB and Susanlynn, you guys are scary!

I got this coin on Teletrade, where they have sold several dozen 1939-D nickels graded MS67 by NGC. PCGS examples in this grade are much scarcer and they all sold for more than double the price of NGC coins. There are no Teletrade sales records in higher grades for either NGC or PCGS.

There were 10 records for sales of MS68 coins in ICG holders. These coins all sold for less money than the PCGS MS67 coins. This result tends to reinforce my impression that ICG is significantly more generous with high-end grades, compared with PCGS and NGC.

I do love nickels--

I happen to agree that ICG is a bit generous on high end nickels, but you can get some nice encapsulated coins cheap because of that (or in spite of).

When you get to 66-69, all of the grading services suffer from a definite level of inconsistency. I don't think the standards change from day to day, but high end nickels are very hard to pin a grade on. I've seen nickels that I thought were closer to 67 in 65 holders and coins in 67 holders that I would not pay extra for (usually for too much rub). A real underexploited area of opportunity for sharp-eyed buyers, in my estimation. Nice coin.
