As a seasonal collector and one who needs inspiration once in a while. I find that books get me seriously into the hobby when I have had a lull. As an artist ( oil painter) I find inspiration from reading about other Artists, not their work but their life. In coins I find the same true, the story behind the collector and the hunt for the specimans they need to complete their collection never fails to inspire me. These great collectors had unlimited funds but still enjoyed the hobby as we do. I have quite a few but always go back and re read the following. By Dave Bowers, The Norweb Collection, An American Legacy Virgil Brand, Profile of a Numismatist Louis E Eliasberg, King of Coins The History of United States coinage, as Illistrated by the Garret Collection Walter Breens Encyclopedia of US and Colonial Coins is always a good browse. ! Any thoughts? Your favorites ? Regards Tony

That's a very interesting philosophy. Like what inspired them to get into numismatics instead of their accomplishments in numismatics. Reminds me of why I was glued to Oprah the other day. The show was almost all about the Osmond family and very little about the actual music. I was never really a fan, but I couldn't turn it off. Did you know the Osmond brothers only started singing to raise money for their 2 older brothers that were born deaf?

Hi Bobby, Yes indeed the story behind the man is sometimes more interesting than the feats he has accomplished.

I'm not much on coin books. I collect the Red Book and most have never been opened. Other than those and a few from coppercoins.com types, no coin books. For an insperation in anything I find the personal touch better for myself. I mean I go to at least 3 coin shows a month and try to talk to as many collectors and dealers as possible. What is on display on the tables is also a great inspiration. Naturally the downside is I want everything I see there. Same with car shows, gun shows, knife shows, computer shows and many, many more in this area.

Dave Bowers is an inspiration all by himself. He started out as a 15 year old coin collector and today can rightly be called the "Da Man." And he did all (how quaint is this) with honesty, integrity and class.

Hear Hear to Dave Bowers! I love everything I have read by him. I have also spoken to him in person and through e-mail. He is as down to earth as they come. He is a true lover of this hobby and prolific almost beyond belief! Mike

Some of my favorites are the stories contained in Bower's Bedside, Fireside, Lakeside, etc Companion books. These are mostly reprints of articles from his old Rare Coin Review publication.
I never would have known what Moxie was if I hadn't read "Make Mine Moxie".
"Excessively Excessive" is a hoot! "The Money Pit" is so memorable and intriguing.
One of my favorites is "Froussard and Woodward, The Great Feud" That one really teaches that there's nothing new under the sun.
Is anyone familiar with these? These are all must reads!

My thoughts? I have a lot of reading to do! I appreciate posts like this a lot, I have too much inspiration, and sometimes it gets overwhelming, trying to learn so much all at once, but really helpful to know more places to look. Thanks, Jen

I like books but I also subscribe to magazines to help keep me interested. In reality I don't need anything to keep me "interested" but do need something inexpensive to help keep me "active" in the hobby. Magazines do a pretty good job of this for me while I am saving to make a purchase. with that being said I would like to thank tonphil for the recommendations and do plan on tracking down a copy of Profile of a Numismatist.

yeah Cook, if you can get tham all, they are not cheap books, but you get what you pay for. These are nice hardbound books that only go up in value.
