I hope this is in an appropriate forum. I couldn't find one I can start threads on that looked quite right.
I just wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude for this forum, its members, and especially the people who make it run so smoothly. It difficult to express how different this forum is than most others in terms of respectful communication.
I'm on a few other forums where the environment is not only friendly, but downright hostile.
One example, on a billiards forum, I expressed dismay at a local dealer failing to live up to his responsibility for taking care of warranty problems with a very expensive pool cue shaft that had failed due to manufacturing problems. The manufacturer's online site stated to go through the dealer, and the dealers are required to adhere to high standards. In this case, the dealer said he didn't warrant anything and would only ship it back to the manufacturer if I paid for shipping. The manufacturer said it was a defect and repaired it free, and shipped it back free. The dealer still charged me shipping ($25). The manufacturer did everything possible to straighten it out, and they were very upset with the dealer. I posted my story and received a lot of outright hostile, and in some cases, severe bullying responses. Most said I was "stupid" to "care" about $25 and that I should consider it a low cost considering I used it for a couple of years before it broke. Others said I was looking for "freebies" and other a lot of entitlement type language. That kind of talk is rampant on the list.
So, I just want to say that this list is a refreshing oasis in the troll filled world of online communication. I can mentally picture these people, that have probably never had a friend or any real social skills, sitting at their keyboards with the intent to make everyone else in the world feel as miserable as they do.
Sorry if this was a bit of a rant, but the hostility and petty meanness on the other list had me feeling really bad. I'm so glad I have this "safe" place to go to, where I won't end up feeling like I need to shower from the inside out after visiting.
Sincerely,
Jim

How nice to read your post. (Not the cue shaft, but that you like it here.) The moderators run a tight ship and we ordinary members appreciate it.

I've been shooting pool since the late 1960's and have never seen a shaft break in normal use including breaking. If yours did, it's defective and anyone worth their salt would warrant it. If that response to your story had happened here, the only foul language would be coming from me as I threw them out. Except we can't use foul language here, so I'd have to abuse them very politely. We cater to newbies. That's our mission. The things you're complimenting us on are the only acceptable standard of behavior here.

Indeed ... this is the absolute best on-line coin forum in the world ... and insisting on reaming 'family friendly' gives this forum a tremendous advantage in civil discourse. I give 100% of the credit to our fabulous moderators ... Thanks for all they do. David

I love the "family friendly" aspect. Not just because kids read it, but I think there has been a decline in manners since I was young that is sorely missed, and even needed.

Gary, same here. I have a separate break cue and my shooting cue has a really soft, premium tip, and I play with a pretty soft stroke. My game is all about control and I shudder when I see folks hammering balls like they are angry at them. What broke on my shaft was the UNILOC joint; it stripped and just spun on the butt. I know this is getting off topic, but this is the family area, so I'll finish by saying that the manufacturer, OB, was incredible about fixing it. I am looking at buying a "whole" OB cue because of their feel and technologies. My Lucasi butt is good, but it's like moving from an MS60 to an MS65.

Quote: and have never seen a shaft break in normal use including breaking. While at the APA National tournament at the Riviera many years ago there was a guy plowing through the side tournaments pretty well and had generated quite the chatter. I went to see what all the hubbub was about. While I was watching he broke and his shaft literally exploded. Splinters everywhere. The cue ball rolled over a splinter on the table and the ref called a foul. The guy went ballistic, enough that they had to call security, there was no question the ref was in danger. During the investigation it was discovered that he was playing under a false name with a lower handicap. He got 4 to 6 years in jail. He was up many thousands at the time, not the straightest shaft in the bag.

I'm a bit surprised at the foul ruling. I know it's not a foul under most governing organizations for a detached tip to touch a ball, which sounds a bit like a cue coming apart, though I've never heard that one before. I guess he and his opponents got justice out of that though!
I was looking online for a gag gift for a friend, a strap-on shark fin that he could wear at the pool hall. He likes to shark.

Wonder if we were at the Riv at the same time, Bobby? I was at Nationals in 2001 & 2003. OB has become popular in the market since I wandered away from the table a few years back. Looks like they make nice stuff, but I don't personally care for laminated shafts. There's a disagreeable "thunk" to hitting with a laminated shaft which I don't feel with a regular-growth shaft. I'm a billiards Luddite.

The posts before mine here indicate why this is the only coin forum that I post on.
