Sometimes, you gamble... odds are against you winning, but sometimes you get lucky... I bought this last week on ebay, I was the only bidder, I showed the link to a few folks after winning it, and they dismissed it as PMD. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/111602428508? I have examined this coin closely, and even sought the opinion of some US error experts on plating issues. This coin is a legitimate weakly diffuse plating error, such as those seen here: http://www.coinworld.com/numismatic...ve-pla.html#This coin has lustre, and bag marks are fresh into the metal. The XRF shows it is a steel planchet, and underweight from normal plated steel cents at 2.2 g. Not fully struck, with a bit of a weak collar strike. It looks like it was not completely unplated, but very diffusely plated. To date, this coin is the only modern unplated strike in my collection. I'll probably add it to my next PCGS error batch for slabbing, something like this probably only has value if in a PCGS slab - because it is something pretty scarce, and odd... Just a follow-up on this coin. PCGS agreed with me and certified it as an error (I just don't like their nomenclature - I don't think it is a "Mis-Annealed Planchet" - it is a diffuse plating error). Not a bad pickup for only $3... http://www.pcgs.com/cert/32839539

Nice find and well done! Don't see this type often with today's 'modern' technology. I don't necessarily think it was gambling on your part, just something you sort of know, aren't sure, but take the risk anyway.

I agree - PCGS mislabelled your error coin Roger. Maybe they are not very familiar with plated steel coins. Here's another mislabelled PCGS error recently offered on ebay. I would call it Partial Plating. They call it a Sintered Planchet, which is quite a different error but probably more common for US coins: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/221909397680...RK:MEBIDX:IT
