Recently I went through some of my slabbed Morgans and came across this very interesting 1885-P (NGC MS-66). The corroded reverse seemed to match VAM-1C but the coin also had a significant number of die clashes/cracks that did not. I would love opinions/observations from our members. Could it be my first discovery VAM? PG

The 1C listing states 3 known clashed coins to exist. I think yours would change that number to 4 if that statement is current. Any letter transfer? I would think that would warrant a sub-variety. Nice coin btw.

This is the 1C reverse, but not the 1C obverse. 1C has obverse cracks near EPL before any reverse cracking, and this obverse does not have them. The reverse is LDS, pitting wearing away and die cracks developed.

Vamsformoney has an interest in this one - he originated one of the linked threads on the V1C page at VAMworld. I'll ping him to have a look; this could be an unrecorded die pair I'm unaware of.

Gosh Golly Gee. I went through the dungeon looking for my subject coin, and came up dry. I cannot even locate the photos I took of said coin back in 2012. I will look again later when I have more time. But Dave's coin looks very much like the one I have (had). As far as I know the issue never got resolved. Maybe my thread on VW should be resurrected to see if the squirrel ever figured it out.

Looking closer, I can see where the obverse cracks will match, so that one's on me but especially with VFM's concurrence it might be worth reopening the conversation over there. This is nice strong clashing on what is likely the Condition Census coin for the VAM - you can tweak them twice in one post.
Rest in Peace

I have not had time to go looking for said coin again yet. But just to be clear, I am no longer a Member at VW (by choice) so I cannot re-open the thread.

Hadn't realized that, VFM - I don't socialize there, just research.

I tend to trust my phone - LG G3 - too much because of the ridiculous resolution of its' screen, the same as my high-density monitor upstairs. But it can't duplicate the contrast, leading to moments of chewing shoe leather like this.
