Hello, first time poster here. I inherited this coin about 20 years ago and am considering selling it now. Any advice is appreciated on obtaining accurate value or pursuing a means of sale. I'm not completely comfortable with sending it off to NGC or one of the other places because I've never done it before, but I'll read around a bit more to see what others usually prefer. thanks.

You came to the right place DoNorth. I don't know much about gold but be patient and several experts will chime in in due time.

You coin appears XF condition wise and is a better date. Retail value is highly dependent on grade so TPG is advisable. I'd send it to NGC or PCGS if you are a member. It could be a $1,000 coin in problem-free XF condition. It appears to be a $500+ piece at a minimum. This PCGS XF45 coin sold for over $1400 recently so having it graded could be well worthwhile unless you find someone willing to pay $1000 for it raw. Good Luck! http://coins.ha.com/itm/liberty-qua...=0&y=0#Photo

Nice coin! Always loved the look of old gold, especially with the circulation cameo. I would grade it around a VF-35, little tough to see some details with the pictures. Personally if I owned the coin I would keep it unless I really needed the cash. Some of the larger coin shows have same day grading by the big. TPGs but I think it is fairly expensive. I think for value, I would ball park $850 or so maybe more at auction but getting it in a TPG holder might be worth it because if the coin makes it to a higher grade that could be an extra 200-300 bucks. Also keep in mind selling it to a dealer, at auction, or privately will all generate different offers which could vary by 20% or more.

To my eye this is VF-35 possibly XF-40 grade wise.

EF-40 grade and if you want to get the most money you can out of the coin it is best to send it off to NGC or PCGS. That can be done through one of your local coin dealers.

I agree with everybody on here. A nice coin. If you have other coins feel free to post them and we'll give them a look.

The coin appears problem free and EF-40 seems like a reasonable grade. You should be aware that counterfeit coins are increasingly common and getting this piece graded will reassure potential buyers that it is genuine. Find a local dealer who can submit it to PCGS (my first choice). Expect to pay $50-60 or so. A reputable dealer will use Registered mail which virtually guarantees your security. The grading fee will be easily recovered through a higher selling price. Good luck!
