I'm asking this, because part of the top of the slab broke, and I was considering sending it back in. I took it to a coin shop, that I kind of know the guys, but I don't know if I trust them like I do the other guy. They offered me like $35 or $40 for this. I kindly turned them down... It has a nice kind of toning around the edges which doesn't show up too well in the pictures... so anyways, what's your opinions? Like I said, the top of the slab is cracked open, which somehow lowers the coin? Even though the grade is still there and serial number and everything else. Heck I believe they offered me for a first strike MS70 2011 Libertad like $40... I don't understand coin shops at all. I never sell premium coins to them... they say the same thing "oh well we don't know if we'll sit on it and blah blah..." It's a first strike 70 Libertad! And it isn't my fault you might have to sit on it for a year or 10, heck you may sell it in 10 minutes, none of that is my fault or should count towards OUR deal. Should I resubmit or just screw it, since it's only a $40 coin... and it's an MS...

Bear in mind stacker that coin shops are businesses and they need to turn a profit. Until a coin dealer gets to know you well your coin is seen as just a source of profit for them. Most are honest but at the end of the day they need to be in the black. Even on ebay a common date MS-60 slab might go for $50 to $60 depending on the date.

OH I understand that part, completely. No profit, means no coin shop. I put in a previous thread I stay away from ebay, and prefer to go to LCS even if it means taking a loss. But to have a coin graded will cost you around $20-$25. So with that, it leaves me a $15 coin. I'm kind of asking what you guys think it's grade is. and since the case is cracked, should I contact ANACS for some help instead of going through the entire grading process again? I never sell any comm coins to shops... you'll have a panda, and they'll offer you spot price. I have a great relationship with a few LCS, this one however is new to me, and was just checking their inventory, and got a fairly good deal on some scrap 14kt gold. But yes, I understand brick and mortar isn't ebay.

Looks easy 63 to me. Maybe the cracked slab is a novelty and would do well as is on ebay if you want to sell it. I wouldn't resubmit it.

How come you stay away from ebay?

About three times a year ANACS offers an 'insider special' where they grade two coins for free, you just pay shipping/insurance both ways. Last one was around New Years. probably will have the same offer around the 4th of July I would guess. you need to sign up for their emails though to get the offer. If you wanted a regrading I would go that avenue, I am not sure how much putting it in a new slab costs (as opposed to just regrading it raw), or what their policy is. I think if a slab is damaged beyond a certain point the companies need to regrade just for integrity purposes. The new ANACS slabs (yellow tops) can be pried apart pretty far once some cracks start along the top. I've been debating tackling a similar issue with an error coin I have in an ANACS slab which has a crack along the edge.

Ya, it's a 64, with a blue top... which is why I laughed on the inside when the guy said something like, he even may have offered $30... and it has nice toning around it. They knew what they were doing. The reason I do not like ebay, is I've been around, and used it since it was created. I remember when I was about 16, I figured out a way to access the adult section without having a credit card, this was after credit card authorization was put in place... When they sold fire arms and all that junk. Anyways my beef is this, and I posted this in another thread, I bought a few CC morgans off a guy a few years ago and had them sent off. From the pictures to what I received, I didn't like... and I didn't feel like going through the hassle. One came back as an F12, and one came back as a top 100 VAM VF improperly cleaned yada yada. Now, I would buy graded coins, or roll of merc's or quarters. But I will NEVER order a coin that is graded by the person selling it. The light they use, the angle, just no. Congrats if you found a deal of a century on their, but chances are, you didn't, it's like playing the lotto in those instances. Buying a slabbed coin, I'd hve no problem with, I just haven't found one on there that isn't marked up 10% or more than what I could pay at a LCS. I've heard of the old bait and switch, I don't do business with people on craigslist after recieving 25 texts saying someone would be interested, and when it comes down to it, they forget how to speak english, or they want to pay me $500 more than what it's worth if I just ship it out of the country for them to prince whoever. Online is a scammers paradise, and I like to look a person in the eye when I do business with them. Anyways, I guess I'll just leave it the way it is, and see if someone, somewhere else will pay more.... LoL... I'm positive I will. Thanks guys!

Kudos for your realistic attitude, Stacker, but there's something you're missing.

There is no reason you can't learn enough about interpreting imagery to turn from a minnow to a shark on ebay. In many cases you can correct the errors in imaging in your mind and get a remarkably clear idea of what the coin actually looks like. By all means, treat ebay with the respect due a dangerous place, but if you keep hanging around here eventually you're going to learn enough to make ebay worth your while.

SuperDdave, I would LOVE to learn enough about coins to where I could look at it and guess within a few points of what it is. Right now, I look at a coin, and I couldn't tell you the difference between a 66 and a 62, unless there were obvious marks that I knew downgraded it. I mean I have a bunch of regular coins from when my grandpa passed away just sitting in my safe, because I know there are error coins, or certain regular coins that are more... doesn't have to be just silver silver silver, but I don't even know where to begin to look to find out that information. He has TONS of bicentinial quarters and such. I'm 33 and he passed away when I was 10. I took out all the silver, which amounted to around $300 worth, and have it in my safe box... I keep nothing of value at home, and don't ever post about my real whereabouts on here, if you click on me and it lists a state or city, it isn't it. LoL.

I'll tell ya Saturday I had an older guy come in to a shop where I was buy some 14kt scrap gold for jewelry, they were selling it to me below spot and no tax. The guy came in, the owner said oh we know him. The guy starts asking me, so what ya doin with that? I'm learning to make jewelry, oh so you from around here is what he said? I said I am... from around here. He asks oh which part? I just said the same thing, I'm just from around here. He asked me one more thing before he finally turned around and left me alone. I live in a bad neighborhood, or have and have had to do some stuff that i"m not real proud of in order to protect myself before I became smart enough to store it elsewhere...

It's not a quick process. This isn't rocket science, but it's not third-grade math either. More like graduate-level work, extremely precise and it does not come quickly. By the time you've looked at a couple thousand Morgans, you'll begin getting a feel for how they grade.

Fortunately, a lot of what you'll be learning is applicable across issues. Each issue has its' own grading cues but generalities still apply.
