What exactly is a "dark side" coin?

I have seen it mentioned a couple of times, and I guess I am a newbie to the lingo....

Thanks echizento,

I looked it up on Google and all I found was Star Wars references and an interesting article about new spy gadgets being placed in coins and why you should be leery of picking up change off the ground. Yikes...Our collections may be spying on us.

I can guarantee you that none of my collection was picked up off the ground ,, however a few of the items I have were found underground !

Darkside refers to any coin minted outside of your own countries boarders.

The term actually came about as a slightly derogatory comment about collectors of US coins. They may know their lincolns, and Morgans etc but on anything that isn't a US coin most of them are completely in the dark. So those of us who collect these coins the US collectors are in the dark about became the darksiders. Eventually Canadian coins which some us collectors know a little about since the country is right next to them, became Grayside. Tokens, medals, and the really off the wall stuff is Farside. US material is Liteside. (Notice Liteside, not Lightside. Even that name is a bit of a poke at them.)

I thought it meant that wherever you live and the sun is shining, somewhere across the world the sun isn't shining and that is the "Darkside". And those coins of course are some kind of foreign coins from another country (basically).
