Not for the squeamish or faint of heart.

A scarce 1667 Louis XIV silver demi-ecu, 340 years old, currently running on ebay.

Shocking that the laurel wreath has been tooled with a heavy hand!

It's similar to the Lincoln/Kennedy only in that it ruins a perfectly good coin. I can't imagine why anyone would do something like that to such a coin. To ruin a common Lincoln Cent is one thing but a coin like this, jeez.

Here is the reverse.

It is a 1667-N 86,342 pieces struck at Montpellier (mint mark N at 6:00).
No adjustment marks which typically plague this series, a choice TTB+.
Worth about 350 euros (US$513) before the tooling

No, both are defacement, it is just 51,300 times more expensive than a Lincoln Cent.
Also 5 times more of the king of Lincoln cents, the 1909-SVDB, were minted than this piece.

Additionally, the survival rate of these coins is very, very low, since French silver and gold coins of this period were extensively re-struck and re-valued by the government in the 1690s and 1700s up until the John Law period of the early 1720s. I estimate that perhaps only 20-50 of these 1667-N half ecus are in existence today. For that reason, this coin still has some appeal, even with the gouging added to better outline the leaves.
