What does the outside edge look like in those areas?

The area under ME on DIME looks like the coin was dropped on a hard surface?

I'm sorry but I don't think it is an error. The two clipped edges look straight and you cannot have two straight clips that are not perpendicular. I don't see weakness in the rim near the clips and the letters don't show weakness either. Maybe close up pictures of the reverse will show different but it looks like PMD to me.

Reminds me of a coin that someone rubbed on the sidewalk to remove the edge in a couple of places.

That could be from a Grease Filled Die. The weak letters I am referring to are the ones near the clips. The metal will flow toward the clip prior to filling the letters in the die thus creating a weak strike on the letters. Same goes for the rim on the coin. Before a rim can be made the void from the clip needs to be filled with material. The rim will taper down just before it reaches the clip. What screams fake to me more than anything is that I believe I can see a partial rim above "IBE" in "LIBERTY". If it was a legit clip I would expect to see the rim fade just past the "L" and "R".
