So say I was in the situation where I wanted to order half dollars because the bank I go to didn't have them.

Would I need to order boxes of the coins, or could I just order individual rolls?

(Updated question) This may sound idiotic, but do I have to pay full price for the box when they order it?

Normally you would order halves by the $500 box, and it's common that the bank would allow you to buy single or multiple rolls at a time, from that box. Just ask the head or vault teller.

The banks I deal with weekly will special order full boxes for me but do not normally "stock" them.

I have found a bank or 2 that keep a box of halves on hand. One will give the full box if I happen to stop by but 50% of the time the box has already been raided by $100 of more. The other bank would only give me $150 and they said it was because they wanted t keep the rest on hand ion case anyone else stopped by looking for halves.

Some banks charge to order boxes of halves. One tried to charge me $7.50/box last year.

Around here evidently there is a minimum order of two boxes. I have to agree to take them both but not necessarily at the same time with payment upon picking them up. They do not charge to order them.

So much may depend on if you have an account with a bank and/if it's a substancial account. And too, some will tell you if you try to return them there, don't ever ask again. By me all banks, except one, told me no charge for a box of anything. One banks said they charge an amount depending on the order.

I have always made it a point to never take coins back to the same bank that I received them from. I have asked the head teller in the past about the banks policy on change. This may not be the case at all banks. If you get to know them then you can ask. Here the bank has a contract with the armored car company to deliver and pick up from the banks that is for a certain weight of coins being transported. So if the bank is not up to the carry limit it would not cost them additional. If they are at the limit or over then it is costing the bank additional money. It just depends on their weight contract. Evidently this is the case both receiving and sending coins.
