New player on ebay, at least he does identify his "coins" as having been made in China. This particular listing caaught my attention (although his auction title is really tortured). Most of his numismatic items are modern forgeries of defunct Chinese issues.

Just a way to sell fake coins, but with an entirely truthful description.
It may cost a dollar or so to make, then import this piece into the U.S. If they can sell it for $1.50, they have made their profit.

It would be hard for the Law to stop them in this case, because there is obviously no intention to deceive.

The next step is to sell high quality fakes in this manner, which eventually are re sold by less scrupulous individuals, at much higher prices.
The re seller may not even know that he is selling a fake, with one of the high quality versions.

This used to be a violation of ebay US rules and the seller could be stopped. We terminated sellers like this PERMANENTLY every day of the week.

The auctions this guy is posting are not legal in the US and any US citizen that buys one of these coins is actually violating the law. Oddly as long as the seller does not ship from within the US he is NOT violating any law that he can be prosecuted under. The IMPORTER is the primary guilty party under the law - so if the law was enforced it would be the buyer that is the criminal.

The 1882 Zs 8R is probably the biggest seller on ebay. Why it still sells as genuine is way beyond me. The coin is actually the 8th variety in a long string of related forgeries that date back to WWII. They used the old ruse of a kid or old man selling a supposedly silver coin for a few cents.

The fact these are poor looking coins does not stop them from being resold numerous times at an ever growing profit.

The fact the Chinese have no idea of what the coin design portrays is very clear in the description.

This seller is also marketing fake jade and garbage that should never have been made.

For people interested in genuine coins - ebay is not the best place to hunt, but for counterfeit collectors like myself - it is a gold mine of new examples of forgery and counterfeiting.

In my new upcoming book "Forgotten Coins" I will have a short chapter on Chinese Fakes - there identification and metallurgical make-up - in a way there is only so many ways you can make a fake 90% Ag coin. I agree there so easy to spot with coin in hand - the problem is when you buy these pieces on the Internet. Not this BLATANT modern forgery but the really good ones in or out of a slab. I will admit - in my Foreign CC chapter I will illustrate around 90 examples from around the world ... a few modern forgeries but mostly nice period CCs - My point - it would not suprise if I make an error or two with some being 20thC.. Its tough with modern reproductions and if they are real silver ... some errors will occur ... I could spend a week or two on some pieces ... LOL.
