Hi everyone, just had a quick question about what you would do for American Silver Eagles.
I'm thinking of trading my AE's in the OGP for a slabbed NCG PF/PR 69 of the same date. Do you think that this would be a good deal or no?
What would you do?
Thanks in advance, -Ben

I love my proof ASE's in original packaging. Like the Walking Liberty half, it is just a very cool coin to own. I hope to complete and continue the set. I think the slab would only be important if I intended to sell them. My kids can sell them - I won't. You sound commited, though, and it's your collection :)

Well I don't plan on ever selling any of my coins, but I was just wondering which would be the better way to collect American Silver Eagles in.

Packaging is the key! If you can keep them displayed in their original plastic rounds so you can look at them, that's fine. But keep the boxes in the best condition possible. For me, I went on and got the SAE Dansco and put one BU of every year in that. All my proofs are still in their boxes in my safety deposit boxes. If you ever do decide to sell/trade one, you will not get full buying price without the original packaging and will be asked where it is every time!

Okay. I have all of mine in the OGP right now, and after what you said, I think that i'll keep it that way. All of my boxes are brand new and I have all of the "paper work" that goes with them. It appears that they are more valuable in the gov packaging. Am I correct in assuming this?

I have seen some OGP sell for more than some PF-69's. The only way you actually see a increase in price is if they are graded PF-70. The same seems to be true for First Spouse coins as well, I have been looking to get a few more of the Liberty FS coins and have noticed the PF-69's sell for about40-50 bucks less than the ones in OGP (these are all graded by PCGS and NGC)

I agree with Bryan--unless there's a real screw-up with the coin at the mint, they should ALL be MS-69 without needing certification, and pristine original packaging is more valuable than an MS-69 (or an MS-70 for that matter) TGP slab--to me anyway!

OK thankyou everyone, you just made my decision a lot easier. I'll keep my AE's the way they are (in the OGP)
Thanks again, -Ben
