Hi all I was wondering what the general opinion was about buying older coins at lower grades. For my own collection, I hold the belief that I should save up and get the best coin I can afford. But I was wondering about buying/selling if for example an AG/G common dated Seated Liberty half dollar was only worth the silver or does it hold any numismatic value at those low grades? *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

If you were interested in Ancient I would say yes, there is great numismatic value at lower grades for many coins.

Sorry I had it in the wrong forum so I am meaning classic US coins mostly. If they were as old as Grecian and Roman empires then I definitely see how those are worth something more. :)

Not really. The numismatic value of a common date SLH, for example, in low grade, will pretty much always be at the bottom. They are worth more than spot, but just not enough room to buy and sell for a profit unless you get them dirt cheap....my .02

Ok that is what I was thinking. I bought an AG/G 1875 Seated Liberty half dollar for $13 and was thinking since PCGS price guide (I know, only suggestive values for those coins graded by PCGS) stated a G-04 was around $30. At the very least I think I could maybe get my money back but probably not much profit at all.

The PCGS price guide is ridiculously out of whack even for PCGS slabs. I wish people wouldn't use it. PCGS has a vested interest in high coin prices. They're not going to be objective.

SD, I figured it was overstated like the Red Book is I just wasn't sure by how much. I guess worst case scenario wait until silver possibly goes up again and sell it then. Lesson learned for the day!

My outlook on coins is to start a collection with anything I can afford. Them if still interested, start upgrading.

I noticed the guides are kind of high for common dated, low grade Seated coins. Depends on how much you get them for. I have seen them go for a variety of prices, anywhere from 2x to 3x times spot. Just depends on what it looks like I guess.
