2002 Tennessee Quarter. Reverse appears normal.

to CCF. Full coin pic both sides might help but as of now it looks like post mint damage.

Thank you for prompt reply. I added two additional pictures. Not sure if they help or not.

I cannot imagine how it could have been damaged in that pattern, unless someone intentionally used a wire wheel on it. (Stringer wheel) It would have had to be quite deliberate to make that pattern. Even that does not quite fit what I see.

Well, there is absolutely nothing at the Mint capable of doing this, so it pretty much has to have happened afterwards. The key to understanding postmint damage is knowing what the Mint can and can't do.

Yes, I concede that whatever impact this thing suffered after the strike could have happened inside the Mint building.

Yes Pete2226 -- exactly why I posted here. Not sure what anyone could do to make such a pattern. Thought maybe someone saw something similar -- apparently not. Thanks for input.

Note the rim is missing on the obverse? It looks like someone used a wire wheel on it.

Definitely vandalized outside the mint. But I've always been curious how the pattern of radial scratches is produced.

My guess is a highly frangible bullet or pellet. There seems to be an impact crater in the center.

Could it be one of those frangible bullets?
