Graded "Authenticity Unverifiable" by PCGS. Worth sending to NGC?

PCGS thinks it's a good fake. If you have the money to burn then NGC is worth a try. "Authenticity Unverifiable" means counterfeit in TPG parlance.

They'll have XRF scans of actual Dollars which read the alloy to tenths of a percent. They know every date and mint mark location (this one seems to match one I know of). If PCGS still can't decide it's authentic, I wouldn't expect NGC to be better than them at it. Honestly, if they can't authenticate an example in this condition, it's fake.

Yup, PCGS has all the tools diagnostically as well as scientifically to determine it's authenticity.

I am surprised that they wouldn't label it as "counterfeit". The phrase "authenticity unverifiable" sounds like a way of saying "we don't know if this is real or not" to me.

I got a coin like that back from pcgs but it was in a mylar flip "body bag" with a sticker that said "questionable authenticity"... I havent heard them use "authenticity unverifiable". Wonder what the difference is?

I just checked the PCGS website, and they list "questionable authenticity" as being inconclusive, and also have a separate code for counterfeit coins. With that said, I don't know what the odds are that NGC would certify it. Here is the PCGS link... http://www.pcgs.com/grades/

TPG verbiage will not state counterfeit or else they could be held liable for returning illegal items to the owner. There is a statement made such as questionable or unverifiable that leaves a legal opening for returning the coins to the submitter.

One of my PCGS gradings came out as a strong "counterfeit". It was a 1901 MSD. That's why this one is odd. Thanks for your feedback
