I received this dime today and on the back side it's missing the US in the PLURIB(US) which is located to the right of the torch. It appears to be aclump of mettal but no letters. Is this an error and if so what kind of error is it called? *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Edited by cuba88 03/28/2015 4:40 pm

to CCF. Photo isn't all that good but it might be a Grease Filled Die. No premium though, sorry. Stick around and check out our great site. John1

I have a little collection of these on various early dates. For some reason the grease tended to collect opposite the bust in this lettering so a lot of the '65 to '71 dimes have various missing letters. There's no real premium and might never be, but they are fun to collect.
It's good to see people noticing their change again after 50 years of not looking at all.

Thanks for all the input! Veryhelpful!
In the same pocket change I found another dime with a double letter. I'm really liking these searches. Now I need a better looking glass. :-)
Thanks, CUBA88

With all due respect, I have no idea how you guys are coming up with firm opinions based on this image. I can't tell what's going on with the coin. It's kind of a disservice to the original poster to make blanket judgments in the absence of sufficient evidence. In fact, his use of the term "clump of metal" leads me away from a Grease Fill.

It is possible there are other causations and a better picture would help eliminate them. Experience does suggest they would be eliminated with a better picture but you're right of course. Might I suggest you buy a cheap folder and save the nicest specimen of each date and mint mark you find. It makes a great reference set and is a ton of fun.

The double letter was probably caused by the press or die bouncing during the strike. It's usually a loose press (loose dies fail catastrophically) and causes a double imagage on parts of the coin.
A picture is definitely needed to be "certain" on this.

Another picture. Hope you can see the lump where the US should be.

Now that I could see as a Grease Fill. Seems the likeliest reason for what I see, anyway.
