I'm thinking of starting a pocket piece or two, and I'm wondering how long it will take an MS-AU coin to start to wear down.

I'm assuming that this differs by metal (clad, 90%, copper, zinc, War Nickel etc.)

Can anyone shed some light on how long it will take to see wear with these different metals?

My ultimate goal is to create a 20th century lowball type set with just pocket pieces.

If you take it out every day I think 20 years would do it, maybe 15 of them. Right now I have a 2013 penny and I have been rubbing it with my fingers as hard and rapidly as I can for a year now and all iv done so far is take the color away.

You will notice significant wear after a year if you keep it in your pocket with other change. It is not so much the manhandling of the coin that creates the wear, it is the rubbing against other things in your pocket.

Which brings up the other much debated point in this forum. Is a coin that is deliberately worn down, as opposed to honest wear, a true lowball? Are lowballs the product of a coin's rich history or manufactured? And does it make a difference?

I keep my ike in my front small jeans pocket with what ever spending change I have. Always make sure it's always in the middle to get even wear haha.i would suggest large dollar size coins since it makes it harder to spend.

There have been a few threads where members posted the progress on their pocket pieces. Here is one of those threads that I found: https://goccf.com/t/139005

You could probably create a P01 from an AU in 15 years or so. It takes a year or two just to wear cleaning hairlines off.

You have to remember there are different materials that make up a pocket. And too, if the pants are loose or tight fitting, the amount the coin moves too would make a difference. Aside from the material the coin is made of.
