Hi Everyone,

Quick question... managed to find a 1913 $10 Canadian Gold Coin for a steal from a dealer in the USA. I have viewed photos of the coin, and everything looks 100% legit and above-board.

Question: Given that these coins contain 90% gold and 10% copper, will import duties and GST apply (I believe "pure" gold coins are exempt from duty charges).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

GST Hst. Applies depending on the province of importation.

Thanks, @Pacificoin!

So provided that:
a) I pick the coin up personally, or
b) The coin is shipping via USPS

There would be no import charges or duty? Would you recommend completing the customs documentation stating that the item is "gold bullion" or "gold numismatics"?

These coins sell for above melt value.. so unless you can prove by receipt that you got it for melt.. I would declare it as gold numi...

Personally if/when I come across the boarder and I have gold coins.. I like to do it myself... I just hate the thought of a declaration package on my mail ... telling every delivery person what the contents are...

I usually have my coins sent to another address in the states and pick up the coins I buy from HA an other U.S. auction sites once or twice a year and declare everything as I return. It's just a whole lot easier and in my opinion better when the coin is in your hand.

No matter it is not pure .999 0r better so the definition/ section under the Customs act is "items of numismatic interest". Also a lot of forum members do not know that ANY importation or export of Gold of any kind MUST be declared or is subject to seizure. I have a family member who works for the CBSA , I get to hear some pretty good stuff about the feeble attempts at smuggling and such. We do many US coin shows ourselves and I always have the B3 filled out when I come back (we are GST registered).
