At a first glance I thought this coin had been ground down but then I took a closer look and noticed the reeded edges were missing. Then I looked at the reverse and noticed the devices are flat in some areas but raised in others. This was weird because if someone ground this down it would be smooth and if someone ground the edges it would look uneven. I decided to do a side by side comparison with a normal dime. I measured the diameter of each coin and recorded the following. The normal dime is 17.91 mm and the strange dime is 17.93 mm. Normal dime thickness 1.33 mm and strange dime thickness 1.40 mm. Notice how the rim is smooth and there is no evidence of a clad/copper layer which you can see on the normal dime. The last strange thing is. When I dropped the strange dime is sounded nothing like when I dropped the regular dime. The acoustics were way off which is telling me that the materials in each coin are totally different. I do not have access to a scale. I will try to get one. Please let me know what you think. Is this coin real or fake? Is it a mint error? I could really use some input. Thanks in advance!

Looks like a fake to me. The font on all the text is way off.

Sure is a fake. You should weigh it, see if it is accurate.

Looking at the rim definitely looks fake-interesting though and yes can you weigh it?

Why would someone counterfeit a dime? Yeah I will try to weigh it.
Is something like this common or totally random?

Interesting question: Quote: Why would someone counterfeit a dime? Maybe it's a dime on a nickle?..

Yeah I was thinking it was a dime on a nickel also.

Quote: Maybe it's a dime on a nickle? Can't happen unless someone at the mint "helps" it happen. And if they die it would be 21 mm in diameter not 17.9 If you are thinking a dime planchet punched from nickel strip, it would be much thicker than the regular dime, and it would still have a reeded edge. No this is just a fake.

A crude counterfeit. Why someone would bother is an entirely different question.

For crying out loud, man, would you quit bumping old threads with "me, too" posts?

I am not at all convinced that it is a fake! It looks odd and different and I have no explanation. However it looks too "professional" to be a fake. The position of the mint mark - is that near where we usually see it?

Definite fake - Loss of detail on high devices on the reverse. Loss of detail on the obverse, looks like the forger attempted to "hobo dime" their die used to make the fakes to give it the appearance of detail which just makes it look more fake in my opinion, lack of a rim, missing JS under roosevelt, and the font is different on both sides of the coin. The nose is what really makes me a good laugh about this coin.
I'd still keep it : D
