I found a 2007 P dime a number of years ago and it had a blob (die chip) right where the initials would have been.

Stumbled upon several posts here from several years back and turns out there's more than one. Can die chips happen in the same location a number of times on different coins? Or is it just a one time thing?

(look under Die Chip section)

It couldn't possibly be a Cud, could it?

They can and do. It is due to the way the dies were designed. They have inherent weak areas.

Look at cuds-on-coins, you will very often see Cuds developing in the same place
Also with die cracks and other errors of this subject

When I die gets chipped, losing bit of metal, it stays that way until the press is shut down, so every coin struck by the die after it is chipped will have the same Cud (or it may change on some coins if the die gets more damage)
