For a lot of years I have read in books, magazines, web sites that U.S. Mint Proof coins were special. The coins were double/triple struck, examined for quality, etc., etc. I have found several error coins in various Mint Proof sets as of late. I found a dime in a 1979 "clear S" proof set with a lamination error and also a quarter in the 2015 silver ATB Proof set with struck through wires or strings. So much for quality control. Has anyone else had such discoveries? Inquiring minds want to know.
I don't think the dime is a matter of quality control. The lamination most likely happened after it left the mint. As for the struck through? It is probably a small quality control problem. I found a proof 2009 quarter struck through a retained thread.
I don't think they check for struck through thread errors. I've seen it many times on proof coins I've examined. Most of the time I put them back into the tubes. (I save only strong examples in a tube for images)
