I wanted to post a warning about altered and counterfeit soviet coins being sold on ebay right now with relatively high pricetags under the name "Soviet Russian souvenir coins" by a seller based in Ukraine. These are interspersed with a number of legitimate listings. They're mostly scarce dates and varieties, including an almost complete 1958 set selling for $100 and quite a few mint pattern types as well. Most of the real mint patterns these fakes are based on are so scarce you'll never see them in your average auction market.

The listing details say "uncirculated" on many when they've been buffed to death and wording is clearly designed to lure in people who think they're getting a great deal on the real thing since the prices are well below current values yet high enough to set a person back quite a bit for an erroneous coin. The quality of these fakes range from dead obvious to hard to tell at first glance. Some are obviously real coins that have been altered, others appear to have come out of a mould.

It really wouldn't bother me if these were listed accurately as copies and set to a much lower price but I think this qualifies as a scam.

I posted some few images and links to a few of these listings below, let me know if the links don't work:

ebay specifically prohibits replica coins and the seller is plainly indicating they're fakes in both title and description. Typical ebay.

The coins for which you posted images have the look of being castings. Not my field for collecting, but thanks for the heads up in any case. Hope you've saved somebody from an expensive mistake.

The seller plainly states what they are. Anyone who still bids it up gets what they deserve.

Luckily It didn't look like any were hot ticket, though some had a few watchers. When I found the listings they were very unclear in their specifications, "souvenir" was the only real give away besides the pictures, and souvenir can mean a lot of things. I could tell they weren't the real thing, but a few looked pretty good. A few being sold were totally fictional. Maybe the information got altered a bit before totally disappearing? I haven't been online or on ebay to check since posting until now. The listings were quite vague and I've noticed they're all gone now.
