A dip in acetone may do it. Search the CCF site for proper use of pure acetone.

There is a product out there called verdicare that has shown some great results... I have used vasoline with some success....

As for how to prevent it... it's basically corrosion.. for that to happen you need moisture/humidity plus oxygen.. when storing coins it's best to prevent exposure to either element...

** That information is if the green was verdigris**

If the green is kind of gunky film it may be due to a reaction and degradation of a PVC plastic coin page or coin holder. In which case the above mentioned acetone works well... but read up on how to use it... as there are risks associated.

Thanks for your replies I'll have the acetone and the vasoline I'll give them a try first. I seem to remember reading somewhere that olive oil might work also any tried that?

Olive oil works at removing the crust off dug coins. I used it several years ago on a dug large cent and it worked ok. I also posted it once a while back here on CCF and someone chimed in that you should absolutely not use olive oil on copper as it destroys the "patina". So I guess without knowing the severity of your coin the correct answer can not be established.

olive oil ... the oil will loosen the crusty bits on the coin and there is a mild acidity to the coin...

After some of the feedback I have been given about my own exploits... I would say BadThad`s verdicare may be the way to go about it!
